Little Known Facts About E-Cigs and Vaping

I found this interesting article on [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and thought it was interesting enough to post on our forum for everyone here to read. We can never have to much information when it comes to our health and vaping.

Posted by Ryan Schultz on November 06, 2014

Plain and simple, smoking is bad for us. We know that. There are studies, and tests, and papers written on how horrible they are. 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins, including tar, carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT.

But still over 40 MILLION people continue to smoke, leading to one in every five deaths coming from smoking-related illnesses in the U.S. (Source: CDC)

70% of those smokers do want to quit and 42% of those people have tried to quit in the last year. Electronic Cigarettes have been a huge proponent in helping people quit for good!
The American Journal of Preventative Medicine did a study on Electronic Cigarettes and the success rates. 31% of people who used E-Cigs/Vaporizers were smoke free 6 months later. While people using e-cigarettes more than 20 times per day had a quit rate of 70.0%.
However, 29% of people who go back to smoking tobacco products after starting to vape, report they do so because of "unknown health effects". Also, one of the leading reasons why people do not try personal vaporizers in the first place is that they do not know the effects it can potentially have on a person's health. This is perpetuated by the Anti-Smoking and Anti-Nicotine groups spreading out information that is less than true. With more and more studies being done, you have no further to look than a quick Google search to find the overwhelmingly positive aspects of "Vaping".

This is why it is so important that as a community, we come together and get the good information out there!

Here are a few little known facts about E-Cigarettes and Personal Vaporizers:

    1. There is no combustion!
E-cigs are not cigarettes at all, they are vaporizers; instead of burning tobacco, the heating mechanism heats up liquid containing flavoring and nicotine. The liquid turns into a vapor, which is then inhaled, or "vaped." Because the rechargeable battery (very similar to a cell phone's) provides the electricity needed, there is no need for an open flame. "They don't burn tobacco, there's no smoke, no carbon monoxide and no odor; what you inhale is vapor" [source: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]].

    2. We DO know what is in them!
Many people say there is no way to know what is in the juice, and that many contain unknown chemicals. This is not true. When you are dealing with reputable companies, they are more than willing to disclose exactly what is in their products.
    There are four main ingredients:
    - VG (Vegetable Glycerin) It is widely used in all types of food and personal care products like toothpaste. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    - PG (Propylene glycol) Commonly mixed with VG as the base of the juice. Propylene Glycol is a solvent that’s used in all sorts of things, mainly known for its use in fog machines.
    - Food Grade Flavoring - intended for use in baking or candy making
    - Nicotine 0%-2.4% depending on strength of the juice

    3. There is no Second Hand Vapor
Studies are being done around the world with personal vaporizers and the effects of second hand vapor. The conclusions are overwhelmingly positive. Showing that there is absolutely no second-hand exposure to any chemicals. Second hand Nicotine absorption was 10 Times less than traditional cigarettes and concluded to be negligible in some studies. This of course varies by brand and concentration of nicotine. Vapor is vapor.
    No Combustion = No Smoke.

    4. There is NO ANTIFREEZE!
Propylene Glycol is one of the ingredients that sounds like it could be bad, and many people mistake the scientific name for toxicity. Propylene glycol is considered Generally Recognized As Safe(GRAS) by the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], and it is used as an[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] (E1520), solvent, and preservative in food"

    5. Costs are lower than traditional cigarettes
This excludes the hobbyist vapers. Once you have the device purchased (a basic setup is around the same price as a carton of cigarettes) the refill price on juices is very low. Of course this varies by person and how much nicotine you consume per day. Mg of Nicotine in the juice is measureable, and if your smoking habit is heavy, you can adjust the nicotine in your juice to match your needs.

There are a lot more myths that are out there and you may hear some crazy things about vaping.

As with any new trend, there will be myths. Misinformation and the skewing of facts creates a general bias away from Vaping. Having the right facts and talking about them in the correct way is the only way to overcome the objections.

    Stay informed and Vape On!

Most advanced vapers actually have some idea about these facts, I think that one of the most controversial points is the costs - whether they are more when we vape or when we smoke. We have discussed this a lot in the forum and I am adamant that vaping is much much cheaper than smoking.

I too think that vaping is much cheaper than smoking cigarettes. I saved bunches of money over the years until I started "collecting" specialized vaping gear. Vaping has now become as much of a hobby to me as a smoking cessation device for me which I should be able to enjoy for my extended life from me quitting smoking tobacco.

The percentage of vapers is still really small and this is what worries me.. I really hope that this will change soon, before some of the moves against e-cigs have had any effect and their popularity stops growing. More and more people tend to learn these facts that we see here and this makes me optimistic that they will begin preferring e-cigs more often.
